Jess Bamrha (Parminder Nagra) dreams of becoming a world-class football player, inspired by the talents of David Beckham. Bound by strict rules enforced by her parents, she is destined for a career in Law until a chance meeting with Jules (Keira Knightley) leads her to an all-girls football team. The pair embark on a roller-coaster ride of sport, fun and friendship, much to the chagrin of their families.

Why we love it:

Gurinder Chadha's beautifully British dramedy is an excellent portrayal of race, religion and coming-of-age, told with warmth and wit. The original narrative is lifted by early performances from Knightley and Nagra as the film explores peer pressure and women in sport.

Chadha is brave in her storytelling and this is a prime example, as the director skillfully crafts a simple yet memorable plotline that is both funny, charming and - perhaps, most importantly - socially relevant.

Bend it like Beckham will be screened at Trojan Squash Club, one of Eastleigh's oldest sports grounds, bringing to life the themes of Chadha's celebrated British film.
